The State of the Union


Students:

Each year, the President of the United States addresses the entire nation in a speech dubbed, 
"The State of the Union Address." Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2011, 9:00pm (est) watch this televised event. Summarize in one well written paragraph, how President Obama plans to help our country. Submit this assignment in class (all) Wednesday.

Current Events: Due Wednesday, Jan. 19th



Dear Parents and Students:

        As announced, Current Events will be mandatory this week. Visit one of the following links and select a story of your choice. The story must relate to the five fields of social studies- history, government, economics, geography, or culture. There are two new additional sites for diversity of reliable sources and most current event stories will be accepted. You may also follow this week's goal to study our two different geographical regions.
7th Grade- Find a current event that took place in Europe.
6th Grade- Find a current event that took place in North Africa.
      English Tea will be served to our 7th Grade class during class presentations of Current Events or North African (Arabica) Tea for the 6th Graders. Students, who cannot participate should provide a note and water will be provided. Participating students can have their parents donate Twinings of London Tea (7th Grade) or Tazo Vanilla (6th Grade) tea, for class refreshments. 
        (And...) Do not forget to write a two paragraph summary of the article in your own words (copy & pasting is not acceptable).
 Be sure to include your source of information and a summary of the article. Any questions?

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Extra Credit

Students (and Parents):
Write a two paragraph summary on one of the various Martin Luther King Jr. Celebrations on Monday, Jan. 17, 2011. The 15 second quarter extra credit points will be directly applied to final grades or missing assignments. Learn who Martin Luther King Jr is as a figure in American History. We will not cover material concerning this period in history, but it is a lesson in modern American history. Enjoy the MLK Holiday and do not forget to study for Midterm Exams. Signing Out!

Midterm Guide:Map & Foldable Study

Parents:

Be aware that students are still walking into class with incomplete assignments. This is not acceptable!

Students:

1. Draw a map of your study region. Be sure to include: capitals, countries, and major bodies of water.
2. Create a Regional Foldable (North Africa- 6th or Europe-7th) featuring each country. Again, include the capital, and population within the tab.
3. To find the Data and Political Map information of your region visit the following sites:
  7th Grade Students
  6th Grade Students
 Landforms Review
 Habitats Review
  Natural Disaster

4. Study Landforms, Habitats, and Natural Disasters Review. Old tests, Zoomers, and assignments with these topics should be reviewed.
     This will cover part of the Midterm Study, due next class (for all classes!). Wednesday a general review will be given in class. The Midterm Exams schedule will be as follows:
        
      Thursday, January 13,2011 - 2nd & 6th Periods
      Friday, January 14, 2011- 3rd & 7th Periods


     Tuesday, January 18, 2011- 1st (Essay Portion only!) & 5th Periods
     Thursday, January 20, 2011- 1st (Objective) & 4th Periods

The Bell schedule will not change.Students will take their exams during their class periods.

This week Midterm Exams begin on Thursday, January 13th. Study material and review will be given in class. As for the notebook, please update your Table of Contents. Many assignments will be returned in class to complete the notebook 7th Graders will receive their updated Table of Contents. So, turn off the television, study hard, and good luck!

Dear Viewers:


Welcome back Students and Parents to the World of Social Studies presented by Mr. Cowan Amaye-Obu. This year class assignments will produced in a digital form and graded on progressbook. This will be a year of phenomenal growth in intelligence. Seventh graders will begin studying Greece through the Renaissance. Civics Education will be a heavy focus area in this curriculum. Sixth Graders will begin studying Ancient Egypt & Mesopotamia to Greece. Ancient India and Ancient China will be included in the Sixth Grade curriculum.
